Mongolia plans to export 30 million tons of coking coal in 2017

July.17 Coal

In a recent meeting, Ms. Oyundelger, a senior expert from Mongolian ETT, said Mongolia planned to export 30 million tons of coking coal in 2017.

Mongolia, abundant with coal resources, is the world’s 15th largest coal producer. It owns 15 major coalfields, in which 173.3 billion tons of coal resources have been detected, and 300 coal storage points have been found. As of 1 January 2017, Mongolia has built 49 coal mines, 29 coking coal mines and 20 thermal coal mines. In 2016, the total output of coal reached 35.9 million tons with an export of 25.8 million tons and domestic consumption about 8 million tons, among which 6.2 million tons were consumed by power plants.

Most of the developed coal resources in Mongolia are located in the southern district near to China. Their export to China is mainly through Ganqimaodu Port and Ceke Port. In 2016, China imported 59.3 million tons of coking coal, 40% of which came from Mongolia amount to 23.6 million tons. Although China's import of coking coal has been declining since 2013, the import proportion from Mongolia increased from 20% to 40%. In 2017, Mongolia plans to export 30 million tons of coking coal, in which 15 million tons will be exported through Ganqimaodou Port, and 13 million tons will be exported through Ceke Port.

Ms. Oyundelger said that Mongolia's current coal exports were dominated by road transport, with a capacity of about 18 million tons and a total port capacity of about 25 million tons. In the future, Mongolia will be committed to mailing facilities, and coal transportation capacity will increase to 30 million tons.

After expanding the coal washery, and building the railway, the coking coal will be transported to the coal washery, and then directly transported to China mills through railway and port. As for thermal coal,Mongolia will build power plant with 450 million watts generating capacity, at that time power coal consumption per year will achieve 1.5 million tons, generating 200 million watts. These projects are expected to be established in 2018 and put into test run in 2022.

To promote the development of the coal industry, Mongolia create favorable geological and mining investment environment, realizing the sustainable development in extractive industries. At the same time, Mongolia ensures a stable investment environment for benefiting the development of environmental-friendly infrastructure and transportation networks - Railway. What's more, the implementation of reliable water supply project ensures that all functions of large-scale mining projects work well, thus improve the production value of coal washery construction. The implementation of "unified policy" will be carried out to determine the export price of coal, and the port entry capacity will be increased by improving international status.
